CIS Refund Service

CIS tax refunds for construction subcontractors

Most CIS subcontractors are owed a refund every year — the 20% deducted at source ignores your actual expenses. Fixed fee £225, paid before we file, refund goes straight to you.

Why most subcontractors are owed money

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% tax from your pay before you see it (30% if you're not registered with HMRC). That deduction is calculated on your gross pay — it takes no account of your tools, van, fuel, PPE, phone, or any other business expense you've actually incurred.

When we prepare your self-assessment and offset your real expenses against that gross figure, most subcontractors find they've paid far more tax than they owed — and HMRC refunds the difference. Refunds of £1,000–£3,000+ are common, depending on your expenses and how much CIS tax was deducted over the year.

The catch is that HMRC won't work this out for you automatically — you have to file a self-assessment return claiming it. That's exactly what this service does.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a refund can I expect?
It depends on your total CIS deductions and expenses over the tax year, but refunds of £1,000–£3,000+ are common for subcontractors with regular van, tool and fuel costs. We'll give you a realistic estimate once we see your statements.
Why do I have to pay the fee before you file, rather than from my refund?
Taking a fee from a client's HMRC refund means the money passes through our account first, which creates client-money handling obligations we'd rather avoid — and in our experience, fees deducted after the fact are the ones that don't get paid. Charging upfront keeps things simple and fair for both sides, and your full refund goes straight to you.
How long does a CIS refund take?
Once filed, HMRC typically processes refunds within 4–8 weeks, sometimes faster online. We file promptly and chase HMRC if it runs past the normal timeframe.
I'm not CIS registered — can you still help?
Yes, though contractors deduct 30% rather than 20% if you're not registered, meaning an even bigger potential refund. We can also register you with HMRC as part of the process.
Can I claim for previous tax years too?
Yes — you can typically claim CIS refunds for the last 4 tax years if you haven't already. If you think you're owed money from previous years, send us your old statements and we'll check.
